Chromium(VI), known as hexavalent chromium, is a highly toxic and soluble compound that has been widely observed in groundwater. It enters groundwater through improper industrial waste disposal as well as geological weathering of naturally occurring chromium-containing aquiferminerals. A new drinking water standard specific to chromium(VI) was recently proposed by the California Department of Public Health. This presentation will discuss recent findings from PI’s laboratory, with special focus on the influence of water chemistry on the reactions involved in the occurrence of chromium(VI) in drinking water sources. It will provide scientific information that will help improve the removal of hexavalent chromium, a contaminant of critical Californian andnational interest, from drinking water.

刘海洲博士简介:
Haizhou Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at University of California, Riverside. Haizhou received his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from University of Washington, subsequent to completion of a M.S. and B.S. in Environmental Engineering from University of Washington and Sichuan University, respectively. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley for two years prior to joining UC Riverside. Haizhou’s research interests include colloidal metal behavior and redox chemistry in drinking water, water reuse treatment, environmental remediation and environmental electrochemistry. The long-term research goal is to harness chemical reactions and processes of environmental significance to improve water quality and enhance water purification and reuse in engineered applications. Dr. Liu is a member of several professional societies and currently serving on the International Water Association's specialist committee on metals and toxic substances in drinking water.
