报告内容Microorganisms and their communities, known as the microbiomes, play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development, particularly at the intersection of clean water provision and renewable energy generation. To transform wastewater treatment to an energy-neutral or even energy-positive process, a deep understanding of these complex microbiomes is essential. 'Omics’ tools such as advanced DNA sequencing offer deep insights that are unattainable with other methods, yet their effective application requires a comprehensive understanding of both their potentials and inherent challenges. This presentation will demonstrate the innovative integration of omics with multidisciplinary approaches, aimed at significantly enhancing existing methods and transforming anaerobic digestion — a model waste-to-energy conversion biotechnology — to a higher level of sustainability. Key discussion topics include the discovery of contaminant removal genes by tracing wastewater-specific microbial evolution, the optimization of digester energy budget by synergizing biological and physical kinetics, and the acceleration of solid waste degradation through omics-supervised cultivation. Moreover, the principles and methodologies discussed here extend beyond anaerobic digestion and wastewater treatment, offering potential applications in broader areas of environmental engineering and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration for sustainable environmental management.
